Men record higher rate of unemployment than women

Job security has emerged as a top concern for many Americans amid the recent waves of mass layoffs and the growing unemployment rate.

According to the latest government statistics, nonfarm payroll employment fell by 345,000 in May. While this number still seems high - it is actually about half the average monthly decline over the last six months.

The Department of Labor also reported that the unemployment rate ticked higher - reaching 9.4 percent in May compared to 8.9 percent in April.

Although worries about jobs are hitting most American families, the statistics also reveal that men have been more severely impacted then women.

In May, the unemployment rate for adult men reached 9.8 percent while females dealt with a 7.5 percent figure.

The difference between in rates for adult men and women can be attributed somewhat to the sectors that have been hardest hit with job losses. Manufacturing, construction and financial services - traditionally male-dominated fields - have registered some of the highest job loss numbers throughout the recession.
