At a time when every company and organization seems to have its own credit card, there doesn’t seem to be any limit to what kinds of credit cards are out there.
When shopping for a credit card, it’s important to pick the right one for you, and that means considering the type of credit card you should get (i.e. rewards credit card, balance transfer credit card, student credit card) and one that you can qualify for. Your credit score determines whether you’ll be approved for a credit card and the interest rate you’ll be charged on any balances. (You can check your credit scores for free on Credit.com to see where you stand.)
So if you are the type of person who finds it too boring to have a card from a bank, airline, hotel or retailer, then you might consider one of these seven cards that are among the quirkiest available.
1. Military Brats Registry Visa Card
Children of military service members often refer to themselves as “Military Brats,” and they can grow up moving from base to base all over the world. The Military Brats Registry was created to help friends reconnect with each other and reunite, and it currently includes more than 85,000 members. And like so many organizations, it also offers a credit card that helps to support the nonprofit organization. There is no annual fee for this card.
2. The Angry Birds Credit Card
It’s been downloaded more than 2 billion (yes, BILLION) times since it was introduced in 2009, so this credit card already has a pretty large potential audience for the game’s creator, Rovio Entertainment. The Angry Birds Visa credit card claims to give you “access to dozens of everyday perks, once-in-a-lifetime experiences and events,” but doesn’t go into detail on what those are. In addition, you also earn rewards points that you can redeem for merchandise, account credit and more. The big appeal for fans of the Angry Birds game is getting a picture of a game character on your credit card. There is no annual fee for this card.
3. Northwest Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum
At first look, there is absolutely nothing unusual about this credit card or the generic sounding name of the credit union that issues this card. To become a cardholder, you must first join the credit union, which is open to employees and retirees of particular U.S. government agencies that include the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and “the Agency.” If you haven’t figured it out yet, consider that until 1954 this institution was named the CIA Federal Credit Union. Like I said, nothing to see here, move along.
4. The Elvis Presley Visa Card
Would you like to have ‘The King’ on your credit card? You can, because there is actually an Elvis Presley Visa card that dedicates the majority of its proceeds to benefit the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. There is no annual fee for this card, uh…thankya very much.
5. KISS Army Visa Card
On another end of the music spectrum is a credit card for fans of the heavy metal rock group KISS. The KISS army seems to be conquering the world, or at least touring it, as they have recently appeared in Australia, the U.S. and several European countries. So if you are a huge fan, but are unable to follow them around the world, you can at least have them in your wallet so you can rock ‘n’ roll all night. There is no annual fee for this card.
6. Manilow Music Project Visa Card
If KISS and Elvis aren’t your taste, then perhaps you might wish to have a credit card that supports the charitable foundation of the legendary adult contemporary singer Barry Manilow. The Manilow Music Project was created to support music programs in public schools through donations of instruments and materials. Word has it that this card is accepted at the Copa, Copacabana…
7. Kansas City Barbeque Society Visa Card
If you didn’t know, they take their barbecue very seriously in KC. So it makes sense that the city’s barbecue society, which sanctions more than 450 contests around the world, offers its own credit card with which to purchase everything you need to create the slow-smoked goodness.
